What a savings bonus asks for

A savings bonus pays you to bring new money and leave it in place. The terms name a deposit, often in tiers, and a hold period: the days the balance has to stay at or above the tier. Withdraw early and the bonus can drop to a lower tier or disappear, depending on the bank's terms.

Because the cash sits still, the annual rate column carries the most weight here. It divides the bonus by the cash and the hold period and scales the result to a year, so a $300 bonus on $20,000 held for 90 days reads 6.08%. Compare that with what the same money earns where it sits now. The annual rate guide works through the formula.

Interest comes on top

The account pays its own interest while the money waits, at the APY the bank shows. The calculator adds that interest and subtracts what the cash would have earned at your current rate, so its result is the gain over leaving the money where it is.

Questions about savings bonuses

What counts as new money?
Generally, money that was not at the bank before you opened the account or enrolled in the offer. A transfer from another of your accounts at the same bank usually does not count. Each bank sets its own rule in its terms.
Is the annual rate the interest the account pays?
No. The annual rate measures the bonus against the cash and the days it asks for. The account's own interest is separate, and the offer page shows it as an APY when the bank publishes one.
What if the balance drops during the hold period?
The bank's terms decide. In a tiered offer, a lower balance can mean a lower tier, and falling below the first tier can mean no bonus. A margin above the tier you aim for covers a payment you forgot.
