Ranked by net gain: the bonus, minus monthly fees you would pay, minus what the parked cash would earn at your savings rate over the hold, plus the interest the account pays on it. Offers whose bank states no hold in days come last, because their figure leaves out the cost of parking the cash.

Out of reach 11

What the smallest tier of each offer needs, against your inputs.

Bank bonuses are generally taxable as interest income, and banks usually report them on Form 1099-INT.

Banks change and end offers without notice. Confirm every term on the bank's own page before you apply.

What the calculator works out

  1. Which live offers are open in your state, for personal accounts, business accounts or both.
  2. The largest tier you can reach with your cash and your monthly direct deposit. Direct deposits count as your monthly amount times the months in the bank's window.
  3. The net gain: the bonus, minus monthly fees you cannot waive, minus what your cash would have earned at your own savings rate over the hold, plus any interest the account pays.
  4. With a tax rate, the same figure after tax at your rate.

Each result shows its working line by line, so you can check every figure against the offer page. Offers you cannot reach say why in numbers, and offers limited to other states sit in their own list.

What it assumes

  • Your savings rate starts at 4.00%. It stands for what your cash earns where it sits now. Change it to your own rate.
  • The hold period is the bank's own number of days. Your cash may sit longer, from the day you fund the account to the day the bonus arrives. A hold stated in calendar months counts its shortest length, and an offer with no hold in days ranks last with the cost of parking left out.
  • Fees count for the days the account must stay open, else an estimate of the days until payout, else 90 days, less any months the bank charges no fee. A tier that parks enough to waive the fee pays none.
  • Eligibility is not checked beyond your state. Leave out the banks you already use; each bank decides who qualifies.

The methodology gives each formula exactly as the calculator applies it. How bank bonuses work walks through one offer from opening to payout, and what counts as a direct deposit explains the deposit figure.

Questions

Why is an offer out of reach?
Its smallest tier needs more cash than you entered, or more direct deposits than your monthly amount gives over the window. The row prints both figures, for example $2,000 needed within 90 days against $900 from $300 a month.
Why does the calculator ask for a savings rate?
Cash parked for a bonus stops earning where it sat before. The calculator prices that at your rate over the hold period: $10,000 for 90 days at 4% is $98.63. The 4.00% default is a starting assumption, not a rate any bank offers. Enter your own.
Does the calculator know whether you count as a new customer?
No. Leave out the banks you already use, and the calculator drops their offers. Each bank decides who qualifies, and the offer page lists what its terms say about earlier accounts.
What happens when the cash field is empty?
The calculator skips the cash check, so offers that need a large balance count as in reach, and the summary says so. Enter an amount to see only the offers your cash can carry.
Why is there no total of all the bonuses?
Some offers cannot both be earned, one may already include another, and each bank decides on its own. The summary counts each such group once and shows the best single net gain instead of a sum.
